Big budgets and famous actors usually create excitement in Hollywood. However, “Desert Warrior” failed to turn star power into ticket sales. The Saudi-backed historical epic arrived with global ambitions, yet it quietly disappeared from theaters after a shocking box office collapse.
MBC Studios first announced the film in 2021 with plans to create a large-scale adventure set in seventh-century Arabia. The story followed Princess Hind as she battled Emperor Kisra in a dramatic historical conflict. To strengthen the project’s international appeal, producers hired major Hollywood talent.
Anthony Mackie, known for Marvel projects, took the lead role. At the same time, Oscar winner Ben Kingsley joined the cast as the main villain. Director Rupert Wyatt, who directed “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” also stepped in to lead the production.
Huge Budget Couldn’t Save the Film
The production quickly became one of the region’s biggest movie investments. Reports revealed that nearly 500 crew members worked on set daily during filming. Meanwhile, years of production and post-production pushed the budget close to $150 million.

Despite that investment, the film struggled badly after release. “Desert Warrior” first screened at the Zurich Film Festival in 2025 before reaching theaters worldwide in April 2026. Unfortunately, audiences never showed much interest.
In North America, the movie earned just $472,000 from more than 1,000 theaters during opening weekend. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia delivered only $87,000 in ticket sales. Other Middle Eastern markets added less than $140,000 combined.
Eventually, the film closed its theatrical run with only $665,000 worldwide. That number represented less than one percent of its production cost.
Why Audiences Ignored “Desert Warrior”
Several factors contributed to the film’s failure. First, the long delay between filming and release weakened public interest. In addition, the studio barely promoted the movie internationally.
Anthony Mackie also stayed mostly absent from marketing campaigns, which reduced mainstream attention. Critics showed little enthusiasm as well. Rotten Tomatoes collected only a small number of reviews, while ratings remained low.
“Desert Warrior” proves that massive spending cannot guarantee success. Audiences still expect strong marketing, excitement, and clear storytelling. Without those elements, even star-driven projects can fade quickly from public attention.
