The 2019 Oscars was an unforgettable night filled with many first and historic moments as we saw some of our favorite stars tearing up with joy after receiving their first Oscars. The night was packed with powerful performances and emotions but two actors showed their love and admiration for each other through an incredible act.
When Spike Lee came on stage to pick his award for best-adapted screenplay for BlacKkKlansman, he did something beautiful and totally unexpected. Lee was bursting with excitement to receive his Oscar, so much so that he jumped onto the presenter Samuel L. Jackson and gave him the most adorable hug we’ve ever seen.
The bromance between Lee and Jackson didn’t start at the Oscars; they have actually been friends for a long time. They are collaborators and longtime pals who have shared many of their firsts together. Jackson clinched a special jury prize at the Cannes International Film Festival with Lee’s movie, Jungle Fever in the 90s.
Even though he won the Oscar, Spike Lee wasn’t happy by the Academy Award’s decision to give the Best Picture award to Green Book. The film has been heavily criticized for its bigotry, which is why it’s understandable that people like Lee were outraged that it was chosen as the Best Picture over the popular choice, Black Panther.
The director was so outraged when the movie was announced as the winner that he waved his arms in anger and tried to walk out of the venue. Although he didn’t make it far before he was stopped and forced to return to his seat until the speeches finished.
