How would you feel if you were left in a candy store and asked not to touch anything? Disheartenment won’t begin to describe it, right? Seems that’s what most diabetic people feel every day in their life!

Diabetes patients follow quite a strict lifestyle. They’re not only barred from eating sweets and sugary foods but also consuming too many carbs. If you’re suffering from diabetes and want to get back to your old life, we have just the right list of treatments for you.

First, let’s understand the types of diabetes

Normally there are two types of diabetes – Type 1, and Type 2. In Type 1 diabetes, the body stops producing insulin very abruptly, but in Type 2 diabetes, the body stops producing insulin over time. Usually, both types have the same symptoms, but Type 1 diabetes can be identified at an early age.

Treatments for Type 1 diabetes

Take insulin

The best way to treat Type 1 diabetes is to give your body its daily dose of insulin. There are two ways of doing that – you can either inject it with a needle, or use an insulin pump. Whichever way you find easier, stick to that; but don’t forget to take your insulin every day.

Monitor your blood sugar levels

Many people take insulin without monitoring their blood sugar levels, which is absolutely incorrect. Unless you know how much insulin your body requires, how can you administer a shot? So be smart and don’t make mistakes that might lead you to the hospital.

Stay fit and consume a healthy diet

No matter how much insulin you take, unless you exercise regularly and consume a healthy diet, your body won’t be able to balance its blood sugar levels. So make sure you visit a dietician and get your meal plan prepared ASAP. And don’t forget to do lots of cardio daily.

Treatments for Type 2 diabetes

Medications

Medicines like Metformin, Sulfonylurea, and Thiazolidinedione are very common in Type 2 diabetes treatment. Metformin helps in lowering blood sugar levels and improves the body’s response to insulin, whereas Thiazolidinedione makes the body more sensitive to insulin. Sulfonylureas, on the other hand, increases the production of insulin in the body.

Maintain proper weight and exercise regularly

There’s no way one can avoid or control diseases, especially chronic ones like diabetes, without following a healthy diet and exercising regularly. You have to stay away from refined carbs and animal proteins as much as you can and stick to greens. And for those lazy ones, you need to exercise daily at least for 30 minutes to keep your blood sugar levels in check.

Knight in shining armor

If all other treatments fail, your last and final option is to take insulin therapy. Usually, people with Type 1 diabetes take it regularly, but those with Type 2 diabetes can also follow it if other treatments aren’t working on them.

Wrapping it up

Now that you know all the do’s and don’ts of treating diabetes, we hope you will be able to keep this illness under control in a better way. And if God forbid you come across any complications, do consult your doctor immediately!
