A lot of celebrity couples have long invested in properties, but Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who have been married since 2000, have taken this business to another level after building quite an extensive repertoire of sprawling real estate properties.
Although they are known to have a rich and diverse portfolio of assets, they recently announced that they are selling some of their favorite properties, but interested buyers should know that these homes are atypical of most Hollywood mansions.
Expensive Collection
While still looking for a buyer for their Majorca estate, the A-list couple listed another property for $10.6 million.
The compound that is up for grabs sits on the island of Bermuda, where Michael’s family has a prominent history, which is why it didn’t come as a surprise that they have a sprawling plush estate in the place.
Together, they have over $100 million in real estate assets scattered around the globe. Other celebrities collect art, luxury cars or designer pieces, but these veteran actors prefer properties, and they sure can afford quite a few!
In an interview, Catherine referred to this hobby as their passion and highlighted how she and Michael love architecture and homes that tell unique stories from different eras.
Rich History
The illustrious Douglas family has quite a connection with the island. Diana, Michael’s mother, belonged to one of the oldest and most notable clans of Bermuda and in the 1600s, her ancestors decided to stay back while the rest migrated.
Therefore, it’s not shocking to hear that the five-time Golden Globe awardee has quite the attachment to the place, even sharing that he celebrated his second birthday there.
Indeed, Bermuda is close to the 74-year-old’s heart, referring to it as a “family spot.” The “Ant-Man” actor further explained that he finds comfort in returning to this hometown where a lot of his relatives live.
Bermuda Compound
Catherine and her husband owned the Bermuda compound for decades, and in an interview, Michael revealed that they initially acquired the property because they wanted a “country home” they could escape to since a flight to the island is faster than to the Hamptons.
The multi-resident estate, which is in Warwick Parish, has a main house with eight bathrooms and eight bedrooms, a one-bedroom apartment, a two-bedroom caretaker’s cottage, and a double-storey guesthouse.
Main House
The Caribbean colonial-style main house, spanning 7,300 square feet, has a facade that is covered with ivy.
The expansive structure has impressive outdoor amenities, including a fruit orchard, an herb garden, a tennis court, and a swimming pool.
The living and dining room both have fireplaces and the main residence also boasts a cozy kitchen with a dining banquette.
The ground level has wooden flooring that complements the wooden cabinets in the kitchen and beams in the ceiling.
The bedrooms are located upstairs on the second floor – the majority of the space taken up by the master suite, which brags a breathtaking view of the sea from the 50-foot-long veranda.
The master bathroom is grand, too, as its crystal chandelier and glass-enclosed shower scream luxury. The second level also contains the media room, en suite guest room, and an office.
